How to convert roof area into squares, apply waste, and build a defensible material takeoff for the Florida roofing trade exam.

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Calculate actual sloped area, divide by 100 to get squares, then add waste based on the roof geometry and material. Exam questions usually test whether you used sloped area rather than footprint area.

Start with the unit
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Materials, labor rates, and pricing are commonly expressed per square, so an error in area propagates through the entire estimate.
The most frequent exam mistake is using the building footprint instead of the actual sloped roof area. A footprint understates the surface on every roof that is not flat.

Work the takeoff in a fixed order
A consistent sequence prevents skipped planes and double counting.
- Break the roof into rectangles and triangles by plane
- Compute plan area for each plane
- Convert plan area to sloped area using the slope factor
- Sum all planes, then divide by 100 for squares
- Add waste appropriate to geometry and material
- Add linear-measure items separately: ridge, hip, valley, eave, rake

Treat waste as a judgment, not a constant
Simple gable roofs generate less waste than roofs with many hips, valleys, dormers, and penetrations. Cut-up roofs and materials requiring specific coursing generally increase waste.
On the exam, read whether a waste percentage is given. If it is, apply it exactly as stated rather than substituting a rule of thumb from the field.

Do not fold linear items into area
Ridge cap, hip and valley treatment, drip edge, and starter course are measured in linear feet. Converting them into squares hides quantities and produces wrong material lists.
Keep a separate line for each linear component so the takeoff can be checked plane by plane.
