Read the notation precisely
A 6:12 slope rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Slope and pitch are often used loosely in the field but can be distinguished on an exam, so read whether the question gives a ratio, a fraction, or degrees.
Low-slope and steep-slope assemblies have different requirements, so slope classification can change which installation rule applies.

Derive the slope factor instead of memorizing a table
For a slope with rise $$r$$ over a 12-inch run, the sloped length per unit of run is $$\sqrt{r^2 + 12^2} / 12$$. Multiply horizontal plan area by that factor to get true sloped area.
Deriving it takes seconds and protects you when a question uses a slope that is missing from a memorized table.

Rafter and diagonal problems
Rafter length problems use the same right triangle. Total run, rise, and the rafter line form the three sides, and the exam may ask for the rafter length, the rise, or the run given the other two.
Watch the units. Mixing inches and feet mid-problem is one of the most common sources of wrong answers under time pressure.

Connect slope to the rule that applies
Slope drives underlayment, fastening, and material suitability decisions. A material acceptable at one slope may be prohibited at a lower slope.
